What to Expect from Your First Osteopathy Appointment

What to Expect from Your First Osteopathy Appointment

If you have never seen an osteopath before, it is natural to arrive uncertain about what will happen. Some patients are nervous. Many have seen other practitioners without getting the results they hoped for and are not sure what will be different this time. A few have had osteopathy recommended to them but have little sense of what it involves.

This is a straightforward guide to what actually happens in a first osteopathic appointment at Hever Health, from the moment you arrive to what you can expect in the days that follow.

The Case History

Your appointment begins with a conversation. Your osteopath will take a detailed case history: asking about your current symptoms, when they began, what makes them better or worse, and what your experience has been with any previous treatment. They will also ask about your medical history, any medications you take, your occupation, your activity levels and your general health.

This takes time, and it is meant to. The case history is not a formality. It is the foundation of the clinical picture and often the stage at which patterns emerge that prove important later in the assessment.

Come prepared to describe your symptoms in your own words. You do not need clinical language. Your osteopath is experienced in translating a patient’s description of their experience into a clinical picture.

The Physical Assessment

Once the case history is complete, your osteopath will conduct a physical assessment. You will typically be asked to remove your outer clothing so that posture and movement can be observed clearly. For most appointments, underwear or light clothing is appropriate. If you have any concerns about this, mention them and your osteopath will work with you.

The assessment includes observation of your posture and the way you move, active and passive movement testing to identify restriction and asymmetry, and skilled palpation of the spine, joints and soft tissue to identify areas of tension, restriction and dysfunction.

Your osteopath is building a detailed mechanical picture of your body and understanding not just where the pain is but why it is there.

The Treatment

Treatment follows directly from the assessment and is tailored to what has been found. Techniques may include soft tissue massage and myofascial release, joint mobilisation through controlled, rhythmic movement, high-velocity thrust techniques where appropriate and consented, and articulation and stretching.

You may feel some soreness in the treated areas for a day or two after your first appointment. This is a normal tissue response and typically settles quickly. Most patients notice an improvement in their symptoms within the first one to three sessions.

What You Leave With

Before you leave, your osteopath will explain what they found, what they treated and why, and what they recommend in terms of further sessions and self-management. You may be given specific advice on posture, movement, exercise or activity modification.

You are encouraged to ask questions at any point. Understanding your condition and the reasoning behind your treatment is part of the process.

Initial appointments at Hever Health are typically 45 to 60 minutes. If you are ready to book, or if you have questions before your first visit, get in touch with our team.
